Autumn Begins in Valparaiso, Indiana

Every year “Autumn Begins in Martins Ferry, Ohio” by James Wright has been one of my favorite poems to teach and one that students seem to enjoy quite a bit. Those who are familiar with the poem know the subject is high school football in a Midwest community, though the work addresses a number of related themes or concerns. Indeed, more than five years ago I wrote a lengthy blog commentary about the poem. The text of the poem can be read at the site, and an audio link to Wright presenting his work can be found there as well.

Consequently, the first fall home football game in late September or early October at Valparaiso University also brings to mind those lines of poetry. In fact, though the day was unusually hot, as I snapped photos at the Homecoming game on Saturday, including the one above, I thought how football and fall are so closely connected in the minds of most Midwestern residents, whether one attends the Friday night high school games or the Saturday afternoon university games.

Additionally, I remind everyone that a collection of sets with my recent sports photographs can be found at Valpo Sports Photography.
