Hidden Swamp in Late May

One of the trails in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore I like to travel skirts a swamp mostly hidden from view because it is surrounded by heavily wooded hills and thick undergrowth. I am able to closely approach the location only in winter when its surface is frozen and everything is empty of foliage. In fact, any view of the wetland is somewhat limited in spring and summer.

Usually, I can get a glimpse of the swamp by climbing those higher grounds around it and peering through a narrow opening in the trees, as seen in the accompanying photograph taken a couple of days ago. From this angle the scene can seem oddly beautiful or surreal on occasion since the water’s murky and mossy green surface always appears almost iridescent, especially in slanted sunlight, and beneath a blue sky or at its edges the shade sometimes shifts to nearly a light teal.
